Fermentation laboratory focuses on increasing the productivity
of microorganisms by optimization of culture condition or media
and genetic modification of interested genes.
The lab is equipped by equipments that support the researches such as fermenter
from lab scale into pilot scale, sonicator, anaerobic chamber, cell disruption, and
other complemented equipments. There many kinds of microbes for our works
that have been done such as lactic acid, bioethanol producing microbes, and so on.
Recently, the lab is more focusing in Effective Microorganisms (EM). Effective
microorganism is a consortium of more than 80 species than can give benefit
to our daily life.
There are several works that we are doing now:
Biodegradation of biomass by using EM. It’s believed that EM has capability of degrading biomasss (cellulose).
However, the activity is very low. Because of that, some modifications have been doing to increase its cellulase
activity by adding the known cellulase-producing microorganisms that out of EM. Later on, it’s called modified EM.
Antioxidant activity is also assumed in EM and its activity influences the cellulase activity for biomass degradation.
The synergetic effect of those activities is testing.
EM has 3 major microbes which are lactic acid bacteria, photosynthetic bacteria, and yeast. Those microbes are
being tested in the co-exist culture condition and their mutualisms interaction. The total population of each
species is being calculated by real time PCR and genetic tools. The co-exist EM can be useful in production of lactic
acid production or other metabolites in the further researches.
